Rollick Guides launched as a social marketplace for recreational learning activities such as tennis, cooking, gardening, kayaking, photography, wine-making, zorbing, etc.
It was a place where enthusiasts of these activities and instructors serving these enthusiasts (e.g., individual experts, schools, camps) could meet and help one another online and in the real world.
The site launched with key functionality that you would expect from a social network and a business / vendor showcase directory.
Technology included: linux, java, apache and mysql. The site was hosted on dedicated machines managed remotely.
The original site was shut down shortly after the financial crisis of 2009. The idea of continuing to build a business focused on recreational learning activities when very few people were thinking about or spending money on them made little sense.
This simple farewell tribute to the original site was created in photoshop and is run on the fantastically lightweight wordpress platform.
